Protection
The packaging ensures safety in case of:
- transport risks (mechanical and climatic protection)
- chemical-physical aggressions coming from outside (gas, water vapour, light)
- product dispersions (hermetic, permeable)
- external chemical aggressions and improper use (dangerous products, drugs)
Extending the life of the product
Packaging can recreate a suitable environment around the product when external conditions are adverse (modified atmosphere packaging). For example, many agri-food products, if left in their natural atmosphere, undergo rapid degradation of their organoleptic characteristics and biochemical integrity, due to humidity and oxygen in the air, light, bacteria, water dispersion, dispersion of natural essences and migration phenomena.
Transport
Packaging makes transportation easier: products are packaged by weight and volume units, then grouped into increasingly larger blocks to facilitate mechanical handling. Precisely for this reason, packaging becomes essential for counting, dosing and weighing, operations that are carried out simultaneously with packaging, often in a mechanized way.
Information
Today, packaging represents an effective information tool capable of providing details on composition, quantity, expiry date, product origin, storage instructions, nutritional properties, disposal methods, etc.
